The First Day of School
Seventh graders, John Erickson and Athel Greene get into a pushing shuffle on the first day of school. Their altercation sets into motion a series of racial charged student riots—as this is also the first day public schools are being integrated in SouthFlorida. The two prideful boys are given a chance to overcome expulsion by the school board. Their challenge, however, is a large one: Change the hearts and minds of the 2,500 students of Gold Coast Junior High School– in a time of national suspicion, hatred and ignorance of cultural differences.
Can two young men turn the tide of ignorance and violence among students, parents, school officials, local and local law enforcement? Their practical and inspired solution, offers a valuable lesson particularly relevant today.
